Every engineering career has unique beginnings. For Desi Lerma, now a frontend engineer at Fetch Rewards' data team, the journey started in a salon, followed by roles as an office specialist and legal assistant. Feeling unfulfilled, she pursued her growing interest in coding.

In October 2020, Lerma enrolled at the Flatiron School engineering bootcamp, completing an intensive 15-week full stack development program. Within six months of graduation, she secured an apprenticeship at Fetch Rewards, which quickly turned into a full-time position after three months.

"For years, I felt like I was searching for more in my work," Lerma reflects. "I finally found what I was looking for at Fetch. There are always opportunities to take on something new and make it your own."

Professional Growth and Development

Lerma's technical skills have expanded significantly, mastering Svelte.js framework, Docker, and Vitest. Beyond technical growth, she's developed confidence in asking questions and engaging in meaningful discussions with colleagues.

The company supports employee development through:

  • Continuing education stipends
  • Udemy business courses access
  • Regular performance reviews
  • One-on-one manager meetings
  • Quarterly mentorship programs
  • Research rallies and hackathons

Future Goals

Looking ahead, Lerma aims to:

  • Present her own technical design review (TDR)
  • Contribute to front-end architecture
  • Increase participation in meetings
  • Take on additional responsibilities

The structured support system and growth opportunities have helped Lerma find her path in software engineering. Though early in her career, she's confident in her professional trajectory and the opportunities ahead.
